On the Economist Intelligence Unit’s 2016 Democracy Index, the United States was downgraded from a “full democracy” to a “flawed democracy”. Flawed democracies are characterized by free elections, but weak governance, an underdeveloped political culture, and low levels of political participation.

Toni Boucher, Connecticut State Senator, "How the Republican Party Might Reinvent Itself"
Melissa Kane, Chair, Westport Democratic Committee and candidate for first selectman of Westport
Douglas Amy, Professor of Politics, Mount Holyoke College, "Ways to strengthen our Democracy"
